Static vs. dynamic testing

There are many approaches to software testing. Reviews, walkthroughs, or inspections are considered as static testing, whereas actually executing programmed code with a given set of test cases is referred to as dynamic testing. Being reasonable, adapting and adjusting

[I kindly beg forgiveness of the Author - name undisclosable - for not initiating a "permission granting" procedure, prio to replicating his work in "Dito" in my own blog. The title of this post coincides with a Famous but unheard number of a all time favourite Kathmandu based band called "Abhaya and the Steam Injuns".]

“Our acceptance of hardship-our greatest enemy”, wrote Abhaya Subba Weise, singer-cum-songwriter of one of Nepal’s prominent bands Abhaya and Steam Injuns recently on her Facebook page.

She was talking about the numerous problems besieging the country and the typical Nepali attitude of shrugging and saying ‘Ke garne?’ (What to do?)

Nepal is passing through a crucial phase in its history. And the road has not been smooth. Five years since end of the civil war, the peace process is yet to be completed. Exasperated citizens are also waiting a new constitution, which is yet to materialize due to power squabbles.

But the two things that are affecting most Nepalis these days are electricity outages of 70 hours a week in a harsh winter and a fuel crisis that according to some estimates have brought nearly 50% of vehicles to a halt. Surprisingly, these are not rare occurrences.

Load shedding sometimes extending to 16-18 hours a day has been constant companion of Nepalis for the past few winters now. The country with an estimated 83,000 MW hydropower potential can’t even produce the 600-800 MW needed to meet its requirements and has to buy power from India instead of it being the other way round.

The problem has been compounded with sharp fall in availability of fuel forcing most petrol pumps to close. And those that are open witness serpentine queues with vehicles owners waiting for hours to fill their tanks.

Non-payment of dues by Nepal Oil Corporation to Indian Oil Corporation, the sole supplier, is the cause of the present crisis. A similar problem was witnessed in April-May last year as well.

Scarcity of diesel has also had a negative impact on industrial production and the service sector. Hotels are having a tough time to run generators and industry associations say they are able to utilize only 25% of their installed capacity to produce goods.

Such a scenario repeating year after year could have resulted in large scale protests in some parts of the world forcing those in power to address the situation on an emergency basis. But in the land of Lord Buddha’s birth the masses seem to have adapted-adjusted to these hardships.

Most vehicle owners in Nepal have cans filled with petrol or diesel at their homes to avoid discomfort during a crisis. And those who can afford buy generators and inverters to ward off darkness during long hours of load shedding. Adapting and adjusting.

“The wise adapt themselves to circumstances, as water moulds itself to the pitcher,” says a Chinese proverb. Adapting to one’s situation is a good quality, but not always. Sometimes it could just be the result of disillusionment or disregard for positive change. That is something Nepal and its citizens can’t afford at this juncture.

Instead of being “prisoners of darkness” or “slaves of shortages” (Abhaya’s phrases) it would be better if they listened to the following lines by George Bernard Shaw.

“Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world. Unreasonable people attempt to adapt the world to themselves. All progress, therefore, depends on unreasonable people.”

Even the escalators are different. Instead of moving non-stop all day long, they remain frozen until they sense that a passenger is about to get on. Then, they use just enough energy to carry the passenger before automatically shutting off again.

The planet Earth's fossil oil reserves are around 800-900 billion barrels. current consumption is somewhere around 90 mbd (million barrels/day). Projected consumption in 2030 is 130 mbd. averages out over 20 years to 110 mbd. 110mbd x 360 ~= 40,000 mb = 40 billioin barrels.

The above calculation easily shows that we have oil for at most 22.5 years. This is the time it will take for a 2 year old kid to grow up and buy his first motorbike. But then there would be no oil, so no cars, buses, trucks, bikes, diesel trains.

all houses will have solar panels.

LANGUAGE.

Women caneasily learn many languages. Her brain sets up. But cannot find the solutions to problems.

ANALYTICAL SKILL

Men's brain has lot of space for handling the analytical process. So easily he can analyze and find the solution for a process.

CAR DRIVING.

While driving a car, men's analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fast. If he see an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object's (bus or van or car) direction and speed of the object and drive accordingly. Where as women take a long time to recognize the object direction/ speed. His single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any), then concentrating only on the driving.
You can often watch, while men driving the car fast, the women sit next to him will shout, "GO SLOW" , "CARE FULL", "AAHHH", "OHH GOD.." ..etc..

LIE

Many times, whenmen lie to women face to face, they get caught easily.
Her super natural brain observes the facial expression 70%, and the body language 20% and the words coming from the mouth 10%. So he is easily caught while lying.

What is primarily on my mind nowadays. It's effect ranges far and wide and it is something which is REALLY for the masses.

The prime proponents are:

1) Trees for the future

and

2) Some organizations I have and will keep posting on my Facebook accounts.

It is the way agriculture had been done for millions of years (unlike the meager 10,000 claimed by modern historians and scientists [humans were hunters and gathrers for 2 and a half million years untill one fine day the devil taught us agriculture, which was merely 10,000 years ago. (God was a lousy fool)]), UNTILL the devil taught us how to rape our mother (and the pleasure involved therein..first He had to market pleasure to replace necessity), the living Earth and bring home BOUNTIES (instead of "Bootie"s), (even if it were meant to feed Feedlot Animals, remember pleasure??) that we started the agriculture factory.

Some Big, mid-sized and small organizations (very few in number though) are fighting sweat and blood to bring us back to Agroforestry. Agriculture, hand in hand with Forestry, a hybrid agriculture of mixed AND organic/ecosystem based way. (which is healthier for everybody, any way one looks at it)

Folks, I suggest you guys try getting into it as I have (headlong).

Peak Oil Theory

When Virgin Group Chairman Sir Richard Branson isn’t trying to commercialize space travel, opening health care clinics that offer alternative and holistic therapies alongside conventional medicine, trying to set speed records for sailing across the Atlantic, or hanging out with the likes of Nelson Mandela and Peter Gabriel, he’s worrying about the world running out of oil. As this article from The Guardian reports, the shaggy, bearded billionaire has been telling anybody who’ll listen that modern civilization is facing an imminent, potentially disastrous shortage of petroleum. According to the prepared remarks from Branson’s recent appearance at the World Economic Conference in Davos, Switzerland:

"The next five years will see us face another crunch — the oil crunch. This time, we do have the chance to prepare. The challenge is to use that time well.”

There was a time when such talk would have been dismissed as the dystopian delusion of neo-Luddite granola heads, Malthusian killjoys and fans of the Mad Max/Road Warrior trilogy, in which an assortment of bikers and crazies battle with a leather-clad Mel Gibson in an oil-starved, anarchistic future. But no longer. The “Peak Oil” theory — belief that the industrialized world is rapidly running out of its most critical natural resource — seems to be catching on in high places. Branson is just one of a group of like-minded British business moguls who’ve formed the Industry Taskforce on Peak Oil & Energy Security, which is urging a switch away from oil to alternative energy sources.

Basically, the idea behind the Peak Oil theory is that the world’s supply of oil is finite. At some point, the most accessible deposits will run dry, and the cost of extracting and refining the more difficult-to-reach remainder of the supply will exceed the price that it fetches on world markets. As a result, production will fall. If that happens rapidly enough and there isn’t an alternative energy source available, oil prices will then dramatically spike, and civilization will crumble. (Well, at least in the Mad Max version of the theory.)

Peak Oil is a notion that’s been bubbling up slowly to the surface for a while. Its creator, geophysicist M. King Hubbert, first warned in 1949 that the world oil supplies eventually would run out, and in 1956 used models to predict that U.S. oil production would peak and begin to decline by 1970. (As it turned out, he was off by only a year, at least as far as the lower 48 were concerned.) In a 1974 National Geographic article, Hubbert boldly prophesied that “the end of the oil age is in sight.”

While Hubbert’s gloomy scenario remains controversial, proponents of Peak Oil point to some ominous projections by experts such as the International Energy Agency, which predicts in this 2009 document that output at existing oil fields will drop by almost two-thirds by 2030, to the extent that it will provide only about a fifth of the world’s oil demand. Development of thus-far untapped deposits and/or discovery of new ones would have to make up about 60 percent of the difference, which is a fairly scary variable to have in the equation. (Even scarier: Last November, The Guardian reported an unnamed whistleblower’s allegation that the IEA, under pressure from U.S. officials, has been downplaying the impending shortage and overstating the likelihood of new oil discoveries in order to stave off an economic panic.)

Skeptics of the Peak Oil theory — we won’t call them deniers, for the time being — argue that all this is largely alarmism. Estimates of the world’s remaining supply of oil vary widely, depending upon which expert you consult. (Here’s a recent Cambridge Energy Research Associates report, for example, that estimates that 80 percent of the world’s original supply of oil — about 3.7 trillion barrels — still remains to be extracted.) At the same Davos conference where Branson sought to shake up world leaders, Khalid Al Falih, chief executive of the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., reassured them that fears over future supplies of oil were exaggerated. “The issue of peak oil has been pushed behind,” he said, according to a Dow Jones news service article. “There are plenty of resources out there.”

Biomimicry

Recently read this book called "Biomimicry" by Janine Benyus .

It was a 'simply awesome' experience. The book talks about "innovations inspired by nature." just like the little flaps at the end of a jumbo jet's wings, pointing upwards are innovations copied from a eagle's wing-end feathers (which also point upwards), reduce turbulence at the end of the wings and allows for the wing-width to be less than it would have to be without them. A zillion such little ideas, 'mimicked' from nature, integrated into our technology and daily life, can make amazing changes around in the world we live and love.

Caring and sharing within the family are traits we associate with humans and animals. But a startling new study has found that for plants too, “blood is thicker than water”.

They cannot speak, move, see or hear, but plants apparently recognize family and respect their space, says the study. It was conducted by scientist Harsh Bais and his colleagues at the University of Delaware. “At least 3,000 plants were researched and it took us three years,” Bais tells Eureka via email. He says that Arabidopsis thaliana, a member of the mustard family and widely used as a model organism in plant biology, behaves nicely to ‘siblings’ – i.e. plants grown from seeds from the same ‘mother’. Interestingly, it is intensely competitive with strangers.

Fascinating and unbelievable though this may be, talk of plants and their ‘siblings’ is not new. In 2007, a team of Canadian researchers showed that plants can indeed identify ‘siblings’. But Bais and his team went a step further by discovering how a plant recognizes its ‘brother’ or ‘sister’, namely by root secretions. When the plant sensed unfamiliar root secretions, it began competing by growing more roots in order to absorb more of the soil’s mineral nutrients and water. But with ‘siblings’, they threw out fewer roots. When Bais treated a plant to a chemical that blocked the secretions, it seemed to lose its discriminatory sense. Clearly, there is something in these secretions that tells a plant whether it is related to others around it.

Strangers planted next to each other are often shorter, it noted, because so much of their energy is concentrated on root growth. “It’s possible that when kin are grown together, they may balance their nutrient uptake,” says Bais.

Eye in the sky gets a makeover

Last week, astronomers detected 32 planets outside our solar system. It offered hope that Earth-like planets, which harbour life, might exist beyond the realms of sci-fi. The discoveries were made by the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (Harps), a spectrograph attached to a 3.6 m telescope at the La Silla observatory in Chile.

The Harps is just one example of new-generation telescopes, far removed from the humble instrument built by Galileo in 1609. It was made of wood and leather and had convex and concave lenses. Galileo correctly extrapolated from - the moon’s mountains, Jupiter’s satellites and sunspots. His observations overturned the Church’s view that the Earth was the centre of the universe. No wonder, Galileo is considered the father of modern astronomy and 2009 is being marked as the International Year of Astronomy because it is exactly 400 years since Galileo conducted his first telescopic study.

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.'
'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree..

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:
Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..

Lesson 6
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.

While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.

As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.

The dung was actually thawing him out!

He lays there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and

promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

THE ROAD TO KABUL

NEW DELHI: The dusty street, crammed with tiny shops selling everything from tyres and tubes to toothpaste, is chaotic at noon. Noisy generators spew diesel smoke on shoppers who compete with cars, bikes and dogs for space on the road. A board saying 'Afghani Restaurant' in Farsi looks inviting. Unlike outside, the cafÃ© is spacious, the ambience is typically Afghani - samovars on shelves, takhts covered with Persian carpets, seekh kebabs and naan on the tables, waiters shouting in Dari, people talking in Pashto and the steely gaze of Ahmed Shah Masood surveying everything from a hand-woven painting on the wooden wall. "He was the tiger of Afghanistan," says Wais, the cafÃ© manager, recalling the Afghan leader who was blown up by al-Qaida on September 10, 2001.

Wais calls himself a Kabuliwala. But the restaurant is located in a lane in Delhi's Lajpat Nagar, not on a street in Kabul. Wais, who has been living in India since 2002, feels "completely at home here". Ever since Tagore created the character and Balraj Sahni brought him to life on the silver screen over four decades ago, the Kabulliwallah has been part of the Indian imagination. The tough Afghan, who would die for honour and kill for pride, has been a folk hero: Sher Khan of Zanjeer who shed his blood for friendship; the rich Afghan who would lend money to the needy; and the brave Afghans who gave the colonial British a bloody nose, not once but thrice when they tried to invade their country in the 19th century.

This week, as Afghanistan votes in its second presidential election since 9/11, the Kabuliwalas - around 10,000 in Delhi - are anxiously waiting for the result that will probably determine whether or not they will go home any time soon. "More than 400 Afghans arrive here every week, mostly for business and a peaceful life," says an official of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office. "There is no fee for the Indian visa and it's too easy to get it in Kabul," says the official, sounding concerned.

But foreign policy experts dismiss such concerns. Almost all of them agree that Afghanistan is too important for India to worry about a few thousand Afghan refugees. "Historically, we have enjoyed good relations with Afgha-nistan and in the present context of Obama's Af-Pak policy, the country is very important for us, not just to neutralize Pakistan's influence but also for stability in the region," says Professor Uma Singh, who teaches South Asian politics at JNU in Delhi.

This is why India has been paying a lot of attention to Afghanistan since 2001, when the Taliban and their Pakistani handlers were kicked out of Kabul. Since then, India has offered $1.2 billion for Afghanistan's reconstruction, opened five consulates in the country, provided planes to Ariana airlines, established hospitals and schools and planned to take bilateral trade to $700 million by 2010. "We have a long-term interest in Afghanistan. A friendly Afghanistan will help peace in the region, including Kashmir. It will also help us counter Pakistan's influence in Kabul and give us access to energy-rich Central Asia. We have a lot at stake in this election," says a ministry of external affairs official.

Since everything in this part of the world boils down to the India-Pakistan rivalry, analysts like Fahmida Ashraf, a scholar at the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad, see Indian foreign policy goals in Afghanistan as a way of "attaining a hegemonic position in the region and emerging as a global power".

"Indian efforts have been to infiltrate all sectors in Afghanistan, to make them dependent on Indian support, thus making Afghanistan a launching pad for its influence in the Central Asia," says Ashraf.

But Indian officials dismiss such views. "We want to see democracy flourishing in Afghanistan. The bad memories of Taliban rule â€“ the Kandahar hijacking and support to Indian separatists - are still fresh in our minds." Though they won't accept it publicly, Indian leaders and officials would want to see the incumbent president, Hamid Karzai, win a second term. India trusts the Shimla-educated leader who has made common cause with India on the issue of "cross-border terrorism".

For Kabuliwalas like Wais, the August 20 election may decide their personal fate, but for India there is much more
at stake.

Citizen” rallies in about 20 states across the country

during the last two weeks of Congress’s August recess. Most

of these will be held at noontime, though some may be at

different times in order to piggyback on other events.

Thanks to the leadership of API’s Executive Committee, I am

first-ever effort moving ahead. Now we are asking all API

The objective of these rallies is to put a human face on the

impacts of unsound energy policy and to aim a loud message

Administration’s tax increases on our industry. Senate

Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid reportedly has pushed

back consideration of climate legislation to late September

to allow Senators time to get their constituents’ views

during the August recess. It’s important that our views be

heard.

At the rallies, we will focus our message on two points: the

adverse impacts of unsound energy policy (e.g., WaxmanMarkey-

like legislation, tax increases, and access

limitations) on jobs and on consumers’ energy costs. And we

will call on the Senate to oppose unsound energy policy and

“get it right.”

Recent opinion research that Harris Interactive conducted

for API demonstrates that our messages on Waxman-Markey-like

legislation work extremely well and are very persuasive with

the general public and policy influentials. After hearing

that Waxman-Markey-like legislation could increase the costs

of gasoline to around $4 and lead to significant job losses,

these audiences changed their opinions on the bill

significantly. Opposition to the bill within the policy

influentials cohort grew 23 points, from 40% to 63%; with a

19 point increase in those who now “strongly” oppose the

legislation. The data clearly demonstrate the softness of

support of the current approach and very strong opposition

when people are educated about the potential job losses and

energy cost increases. Our expectation is to translate

peoples’ real concerns for job losses and increased energy

costs to all unsound proposals (e.g., Waxman-Markey-like

legislation, tax increases, and access limitations).

We have identified 11 states with a significant industry

presence and 10 other states where we have assets on the

ground. We also have attracted allies from a broad range of

interests: the Chamber of Commerce and NAM , the trucking

industry, the agricultural sector, small business, and many

others, including a significant number of consumer groups,

which have pledged to have their membership join in the

events in states where they have a strong presence. We also

are collaborating closely with the allied oil and natural

gas industry associations on these events.

While such efforts are never easy and the risk of failure is

always present, we must move aggressively in preparation for

the post-Labor Day debate on energy, climate and taxes.

The measure of success for these events will be the

diversity of the participants expressing the same message,

as well as turnouts of several hundred attendees. In the 11

states with an industry core, our member company local

leadership—including your facility manager’s commitment to

provide significant attendance—is essential to achieving the

participation level that Senators cannot ignore. In

addition, please include all vendors, suppliers,

contractors, retirees and others who have an interest in our

success.

To be clear, API will provide the up-front resources to

ensure logistical issues do not become a problem. This

includes contracting with a highly experienced events

management company that has produced successful rallies for

presidential campaigns, corporations and interest groups. It

also includes coordination with the other interests who

share our views on the issues, providing a field coordinator

in each state, conducting a comprehensive communications and

advocacy activation plan for each state, and serving as

central manager for all events.

We are asking all API members to assist in these August

activities. The size of the company does not matter, and

every participant adds to the strength of our collective

voice. We need two actions from each participating company.

ACTION NEEDED

Please provide us with the name of one central coordinator

for your company’s involvement in the rallies. (We will look

to this person as your representative to assist the overall

effort.) If you will let me know ASAP, we can be in touch

quickly and provide that person with additional details

about the project.

Please indicate to your company leadership your strong

support for employee participation in the rallies.

(Unfortunately, we are already experiencing some delay from

your regional people since they are not yet aware that

headquarters supports the effort.) I believe that expression

of support to your company leadership is a fundamental

predicate to organizing quickly and achieving success in

this endeavor.

The list of tentative venues is attached. Please treat this

information as sensitive and ask those in your company to do

so as well, as some of these places may be subject to

change, and we don’t want critics to know our game plan. You

can assume with confidence that the advocates for WaxmanMarkey-

like legislation and the critics of oil and gas are

going to be very active, particularly during the August

recess.

Once the list of venues and exact rally dates are

determined, we will contact your company’s coordinator to

distribute the information internally and to coordinate

transportation to the venues, if required, for your

employees. In the meantime, your company’s coordinator could

assist us by telling us in which of the venues listed below

your company has facilities or employees who can

participate.

project and the other advocacy steps we are undertaking to

deliver the policy outcomes we support with measurable

“It is one of the most prevalent problems for the modern man; the whole of humanity is suffering from uprootedness. When you become aware of it, you will always feel a wavering in the legs, uncertainty, because the legs are really the roots of man. Through his legs man is rooted in the earth.

“Once you understand a problem directly, it is already on the way to being solved. Now you have to do two or three things.”

When: Every morning

Step 1: Shifting Your Weight
“Stand on your feet, just 6 to 8” apart, and close your eyes. Then put your whole weight on the right foot, as if you are standing only on the right; the left is unburdened. Feel it, and then shift to the left foot. Your whole weight is on the left foot and you relieve the right foot completely, as if it has nothing to do. It is just there on the earth but it has no weight to it.

“Do this 4 to 5 times — feeling this shift of energy — and feel how it feels.
Then try to be just in the middle, neither on the left nor the right, or on both. Just in the middle — no emphasis, fifty-fifty. That 50-50 feeling will give you more rootedness in the earth.

Step 2: Run and Breathe!
“If you are near the sea, every morning go to the beach and run on the sand. If you are near the sea, run anywhere barefoot — no shoes on, just on the naked earth so there is a contact between your feet and the earth. Within a few weeks you will start feeling a great energy and strength in your legs.

“Also, start taking deeper breaths. With shallow breathing one starts feeling uprooted. The breath must go to the very root of your being, and the root is your sex center — so then there is a continuous massage of the sex center by the breathing. Then you feel rooted.

“Otherwise if your breathing is shallow and never goes to the sex center there is a gap — which makes you feel confused, uncertain, not knowing who you are, where you are going, just drifting. Then you will become lusterless, no life, because how can life be without purpose? And how can there be purpose when you are not rooted in your own energy?

“So first: grounding in the earth, which is the mother of all.
“Then grounding in the sex center. which is the father of all.
“Then you will be completely at ease, centered and grounded.”

Step 3: Stand and Shift
End your running repeating the instructions outlined in Step 1.

The Science of Breath

“The next step after the perfection of posture is breath control....”

These words breath control are not good; it is not a right rendering of the wordpranayam.

Pranayam never means breath control. It simply means the expansion of the vital energy. Prana-ayam: prana means the vital energy hidden in breath, and ayam means infinite expansion. It is not breath control. The very word control is a little ugly, because it gives you a feeling of the controller; the will enters. Pranayam is totally different: expansion of vitality; breathing in such a way that you become one with the whole’s breathing; breathing in such a way that you are not breathing in your own individual way, you are breathing with the whole.

In deep love people breathe together; in hatred never. I have a feeling that if you are inimical to somebody, he may be a thousand miles away.... This is just a feeling because no scientific research exists for it, but someday the scientific research is possible. But I have a very deep feeling that if you are inimical to somebody, he may be in America and you may be in India, you will breathe separately; you cannot breathe together. Your lover may be in China, you may be here in Pune — you may not even have the address with you where your lover is — but you will breathe together. This is how it should be, and I know it is that way, but no scientific proof exists. That’s why I say this is just my feeling. Someday, somebody will prove the scientific thing also.

Pranayam means: to breathe with the whole. To breathe with the whole, to become the breath of the eternal and the whole is pranayam. Then you expand. Then your life energy goes on expanding with trees and mountains and sky and stars. Then a moment comes, the day you become a buddha; you have completely disappeared. Now you no longer breathe, the whole breathes in you. Now your breathing and the whole’s breathing are never apart; they are always together. So much so that it is now useless to say that “this is my breath.”

When you breathe in, there comes a moment when the breath has completely gone in; for a certain second breathing stops. The same happens when you exhale. You breathe out: when the breath is completely released, for a certain second, again, breathing stops. In those moments you face death, and to face death is to face the divine. To face death is to face the divine — I repeat it — because when you die, the divine lives in you. Only after the crucifixion is there resurrection. That’s why I say Patanjali is teaching the art of dying.

When the breathing stops, when there is no breathing, you are exactly in the same stage as you will be in when you will die. For a second you are in tune with death; breathing has stopped. Attune yourself to become more and more aware of these stops, these gaps. Through these gaps, the divine enters you like death.

“The next step after the perfection of posture is pranayam, which is accomplished through holding the breath....” So when you inhale, hold it a little longer so that the gate can be felt. When you exhale it, hold it outside a little longer so that you can feel the gap a little more easily; you have a little more time. “...or stopping the breath suddenly.” Or, anytime, stop the breath suddenly. Walking on the road: stop it — just a sudden jerk, and death enters. Anytime you can stop the breath suddenly, anywhere, in that stopping, death enters.

The more you do these stoppages, the gaps, the wider the gate becomes. You can feel it more. Try it. Make it a part of your life. Whenever you are not doing anything, let the breath go in...stop it. Feel there; somewhere there is the door. It is dark; you will have to grope. The door is not immediately available. You will have to grope...but you will find.

Whenever you stop the breath, thoughts will stop immediately. Try it. Suddenly stop the breath: and immediately there is a break and thoughts stop, because thoughts and breaths both belong to life...this so-called life. In the other life, the divine life, breathing is not needed. You live; there is no need to breathe. And thoughts are not needed. You live; thoughts are not needed. Thoughts and breath are part of the physical world. No-thought, no-breath, are part of the eternal world.

Patanjali says these three — stopping inside, stopping outside, stopping suddenly...and there is a fourth which is internal. That fourth has been emphasized by Buddha very much; he calls it anapana sata yoga. He says, “Don’t try to stop anywhere. Simply watch the whole process of breath.” The breath coming in — you watch, don’t miss a single point. The breath is coming in — you go on watching. Then there is a stop, automatic stop, when the breath has entered you — watch the stop. Don’t do anything; simply be a watcher. Then the breath starts for the outer journey; go on watching. When the breath is completely out, stops; watch that stop also. Then the breath goes on coming in, going out, coming in, going out — you simply watch. This is the fourth: just by watching you become separate from the breath.

When you are separate from the breath you are separate from the thoughts. In fact breath is the parallel process in the body to thoughts in the mind. Thoughts move in the mind; breath moves in the body. They are parallel forces, two aspects of the same coin.

Patanjali also refers to it, although he has not emphasized the fourth. He simply refers to it, but Buddha has completely focused his whole attention on the fourth; he never talks about the three. The whole Buddhist meditation is the fourth.

“There is a fourth sphere of pranayam” — that is, of witnessing — “which is internal, and it goes beyond the other three.” But Patanjali is really very scientific. He never uses the fourth, but he says that it is beyond the three. Must be Patanjali didn’t have as beautiful a group of disciples as Buddha had. Patanjali must have been working with more body oriented people, and Buddha was working with more mind-oriented people. He says that the fourth goes beyond the three, but he himself never uses it — he goes on saying all that can be said about yoga. That’s why I say he is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end: he has not left out a single point. Patanjali’sYoga Sutras cannot be improved.

There are only two people in the world who created a whole science alone. One is Aristotle, in the West, who created the science of logic — alone, with nobody’s cooperation. And for these two thousand years nothing has been improved; it remains the same. It remains perfect.

The other is Patanjali, who created the whole science of yoga — which is many times, a million times greater than logic — alone. It could not be improved; it has not been improved; and I don’t see any point how it can be improved any day. The whole science is there, perfect, absolutely perfect.

When all things are seen as Awakened Experience then enlightenment and delusion, practices, life and death, Awakened Ones and sentient beings can be clearly discerned. When the vast expanse of experiences are met without self then there are no enlightenment, and no delusion, no practices, no life, no death, no Awakened Ones, no sentient beings. The Way of Awake Awareness transcends nothing or something. Thus, there are delusion and enlightenment, life and death, Awakened Ones and sentient beings. However, it is like this: despite our grasping flowers wither, despite our irritation weeds flourish.

To practice by pushing ahead, meeting the numberless experiences as a self and witnessing them thus, is delusion. When the vast expanse of experiences move forward and practice and realize the self, this is Awakening.

Awakened Ones enlighten delusion, sentient beings are deluded within enlightenment. Further, there is enlightenment before enlightenment, there is delusion within delusion. When you truly see yourself as Awakened, you need not see yourself as Awakened. The realized Awakened One realizes daily life as Awake Awareness.

With the single bodymind see forms, with the single bodymind hear sounds, and they are intimately understood. This is not like reflections within a mirror or the moon in water; with these one side is in plain view, the other is hidden.

Studying the Way of Awakening is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. Forgetting the self is being awakened by the vast expanse of experiences. Being awakened by the vast expanse, one's bodymind is dropped right through and so are those of others.

No sign of enlightenment can be found and this signlessness presents itself continuously. At first, when you seek the truth, you have separated yourself from where it is. Finally, when you have received true transmission, at that instant you are the original you.

Riding in a boat and watching the shore, it looks as if it is the shore that's moving. Look directly at the boat, and you'll know that it's the boat that moves. In the same way, if you examine and discern the numberless experiences while confused about your own bodymind you will think that your mind and its nature are permanent. Be intimate with all that you do, return to the original you, and it will be clear that the numberless experiences are without self.

Firewood becomes ashes, it does not become wood again. Don't think that wood is first, ashes after. Your understanding must penetrate that although firewood is firewood, it has a before and after; that having this before, this after, it is free of these. Ashes are ashes and have a before and after. Wood doesn't become wood again after being ashes and when you die, you are dead, you do not return to life. Life does not become death; this is the true teaching of the Awakened One. Thus, life is beginningless. Death does not become life; this is the true teaching of the Awakened One. Thus, death is endless. Life is life, death is death and are each in their own place like winter and spring. Winter does not become spring, spring does not become winter.

Waking up is like the moon reflecting upon water; the moon isn't wet, the water isn't stirred. With all of its radiance, the moon can be seen even in a puddle. Full moon, vast sky, can both be reflected in a single drop of dew hung from a blade of grass. Awakening does not obstruct you just as the moon doesn't ruffle the water. You can no more grasp at Awakening than the dew drop can restrain the full moon, the vast sky. As deep as the drop is, so high is the moon. As to how long such a reflection will last, just consider the water's depth, the moon's light.

When truth has not yet filled the bodymind, it seems you're bursting over. When bodymind is one with it, you can see what's missing.

Sailing on the ocean with no land in sight, looking in the four directions, all you can see is the round ocean. Actually, the ocean isn't round or square, it has myriad qualities like a palace, like an ornament. It only seems round as far as we can see at that brief time. View the vast expanse of experiences in this way.

Life itself is enlightenment itself and has many aspects but you can only see what your understanding of practice allows. To appreciate the vast expanse of experiences, understand that oceans and mountains may seem round or square but there are details to still be seen and that there are whole world-systems in all directions. Your immediate circles of concern are of no account. What is demonstrates itself right here beneath your feet and in a single drop of water.

No matter how far a fish swims, it doesn't come to the end of the ocean. No matter how far a bird flies, it doesn't come to the end of the sky. Since the beginning, fish and birds have always been one with their elements. When there is a great need, a great use appears. When there is a small need, a small use appears. Thus the full use of things is always as it is. Wherever something is, it covers its own ground. If a bird cut itself off from the sky it would die. If a fish cut itself off from water it would die. Also, the life of the sky is the bird itself, the life of the water is the fish. The bird is life, the fish is life. You can expand on these examples if you'd like. Practice, enlightenment, long and short life are examples.

If a bird or fish ever even tried to escape its own element it would be without its own place. Realizing your life as your life you realize the exertion of Awake Awareness. Realizing this, everything you do is actually done as the Way itself. There is no big or small, self or other, beginning, ending—and so this Way exists now. You practice and realize the Way of Awake Awareness by picking up one thing and penetrating it, by finishing with it through understanding it. The place is here, the Way everywhere. You cannot come to the limits of the truth since your study of the Way of Awareness gives rise simultaneously to your scope of vision. Do not limit realization within the limits of your own knowledge. Even after realization is manifest, it is so intimate it cannot be known as personal and so any expression of it must always leave room for more.

The monk Baoche of Magu mountain sat fanning himself when a monk came and asked, "The nature of the wind is constant and acts universally. Why do you use a fan?".

The master responded, "Although you understand the constant nature of the wind, you do not see its universal action".

"What is this universal action?", the monk asked.

The master fanned himself, the monk bowed.

This is the vital way of the transmission of the enlightening experience of Awake Awareness. If you say we do not need to use a fan because the nature of the wind is constant, that our knowledge of this constancy requires no fan, you don't know anything at all about the winds nature or of constancy. It is due to the constant nature of Awake Awareness that it can make the earth golden, and long rivers to run with sweet fermented milk.

The utopia experiment

The utopia experiment is based on the following scenario:

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, most people in Britain assumed that life would continue much as it had done for the previous few decades. People would continue to get richer, live longer, and buy fancier electronic gadgets. They would continue to drive cars, work in offices, earn money, and buy their food in supermarkets. Although this way of life was only a few decades old, it seemed as timeless and permanent as the sun and the moon.

A few sceptical voices warned that this sense of permanence was an illusion, that infinite economic growth on a finite planet was impossible, that global warming and the looming energy crisis would soon put an end to the consumer-friendly economy. But few people took any notice. Academics discussed the possibility of economic collapse in comfortably upholstered leather armchairs, and politicians commissioned lengthy reports recommending policies that they had no intention of implementing. And the vast mass of ordinary people went on driving cars, working in offices, earning money, and buying their food in supermarkets.

When the predictions of the sceptics came true, and the economy started creaking, there was no announcement on the evening news, no billboards proclaiming economic collapse. It was much more banal than that. The first signs of impending doom were no more spectacular than inflation and unemployment. It was the price of energy that began to shoot up first. Electricity and gas got more and more expensive, and an ever larger slice of the household budget went on cooking and heating, leaving less for cable TV, fancy clothes and holidays abroad – all of which came increasingly to be seen as luxuries. Petrol doubled in price too, a hard blow to a nation that had become accustomed to driving long distances to work and shopping in out of town superstores. Since the food in those superstores was also transported long distances, often by lorry, the rising price of fuel also pushed up the price of food. Everyone began to feel a lot poorer.

The consequent drop in demand for consumer goods put a lot of shops and companies out of business, and unemployment surged further. Soup kitchens reappeared in most cities, and the number of homeless people rose dramatically as more and more families found they couldn't pay their mortgages any more and their houses were re-possessed.

The news from abroad was increasingly bleak too, as high fuel and energy prices hit the poorer countries even harder than the wealthier ones like Britain. Hardly a day passed without some new outbreak of civil violence in Africa, the Middle East or Asia – riots in some places, insurgency and guerrilla warfare in others. Vast numbers of beleaguered civilians fled these troubles, and the throngs of migrants were swelled by those who simply failed to find work at home. Some of the migrants blamed the West for their problems, and were willing recruits to the expanding ranks of terrorist groups, whose multiplying plots overwhelmed the already overburdened security services. The response, in Britain as elsewhere, was predictable; more surveillance, further restrictions on civil liberties, and tighter border controls.

The beefed-up security budget strained the public purse, which had already been weakened by falling tax revenue as fewer people were in work. Public services were slashed, and all sorts of infrastructure, from roads to sewage plants, was no longer properly maintained. Then the power cuts began. They started as an occasional annoyance, but it wasn't long before the electricity companies were having to schedule them so that people could at least plan for the current being switched off, and turn on their emergency generators, sales of which boomed, as did sales of solar panels and small wind turbines – at least, among those who could still afford such things.

Those who couldn't just used candles, and sat around talking. All of their previous evening activities had depended on electricity, so at first people were at a loss to know how to entertain themselves without it, but a few did eventually begin to rediscover the lost art of conversation, or taught themselves how to play the acoustic guitar. But the loss of light was in many cases accompanied by the loss of heat, as houses with electric radiators were hit by a double whammy. Those with gas central heating looked on smugly at first – until disruptions in the supply of gas from Russia put them in the same boat. People complained loudly to begin with, and then shut up and put on thick sweaters. Whole families took to huddling together in one bed at night just to keep warm, under piles of duvets and blankets. Many older people succumbed to hypothermia.

Cold showers were harder to adapt to, and many people preferred to stay dirty for longer. They had to wash their clothes by hand too, as washing machines were not very effective without hot water, and used too much electricity anyway. People became much smellier, and head lice began to spread rapidly. Duvets became infested with bedbugs, and the health system began to creak under the weight of so many cases of pneumonia. As rubbish collection became increasingly infrequent, rotting food and other waste began to pile up at street corners, and soon there were outbreaks of typhoid and cholera in London and Manchester.

And still most people failed to see that they were living through the beginnings of a catastrophe. Every day on the radio an array of experts could be heard claiming that a return to prosperity was just around the corner, and suggesting policy initiatives that would turn the economy around. More ominously, increasing air-time was given over to the leaders of extremist movements, political and religious, who took advantage of the growing fear and despair to promote their gospels of hate.

Then came hurricane Gina. When it hit New York, on 30 September 2012, it did much more than make a lot of people and companies homeless. The insurance market was overwhelmed by the claims, and the resulting financial panic spread from one stock market to another like a forest fire. The dollar lost half its value in one day. The Chinese sold their dollar reserves, causing the dollar to collapse still further. All major currencies went into free fall. Inflation spiraled out of control. Soon, money was hardly worth having at all.

Suddenly, most businesses were no longer viable. All the big supermarkets virtually shut down overnight. Panic buying ensued, and attempts by the government to impose rationing failed dismally. Within a day, there was nothing left on the supermarket shelves. Looters began raiding the remaining shops that still had food, and the army was deployed in all the major cities. But the soldiers were ill-prepared for keeping martial law in their own country, and the trickle of desertions soon became a flood. Likewise, most police officers preferred to stay at home to protect their own families than face the angry mobs rampaging through the city streets.

Huge numbers of people began to flee the cities – mostly on foot, as the scarcity of petrol made driving a rarity. Most of the refugees did not get very far. Unaccustomed to sleeping outdoors or even camping, the cold winter weather put paid to thousands. Those who survived the frosty nights grew weaker to hunger and disease.

All that seems a long time ago now. Today, in the year 2025, things have calmed down a lot. There are still some people living the cities, but on the whole they aren't nice places to be. The only way to make a reasonable living there now is by prostitution, drug-dealing, or protection rackets. Those who aren't involved in these lucrative trades struggle to make ends meet. They pull the copper out of the walls and rip out sinks and pipework to swap for food on street corners. They would love to move out to the country, but they know it's too late for that now – those who already live there don't look kindly on incomers. In fact, they have a nasty habit of killing them.

Back in the first decade of the twenty-first century, before the crash, some of few people who saw the writing on the wall got together and started preparing for the challenging times ahead. They set up self-sufficient communities in rural areas far enough away from the major cities to avoid the first wave of refugees. They taught themselves many old crafts that had been widespread before the industrial revolution, but which had largely died out in the twentieth century, such as weaving and smelting. They also learned to defend themselves against attacks by hostile strangers. And they began to store up cultural artifacts – books, music, works of art – to preserve for posterity, like secular equivalents of the European monasteries which preserved the great books of classical antiquity throughout the Dark Ages, and so enabled future generations to enjoy these ancient treasures.

One of those communities was called the utopia experiment. Nowadays, those of us who live here, simply call it utopia. It's not quite as ironic a name as it might first appear. For what we've discovered is that, in many ways, things are better now than they were before the crash – at least, it is for those of us who are lucky enough to live out here in the countryside. The air is much cleaner for one thing, and the wildlife has made a comeback. People have a lot more time to spend with their children, and neighbours are always helping each other out. And all that walking around and manual labor means that people are a lot fitter than they used to be. You certainly don't see any fat people any more. We like to think that the crash gave some people a second chance, an opportunity to escape from the awful state we'd got ourselves into in the late twentieth century.

On one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. And on that occasion the lay woman Velukandaki, Nanda's mother, had established a donation endowed with six factors for the community of monks headed by Sariputta & Moggallana. The Blessed One saw with his divine eye, surpassing the human, that the laywoman Velukandaki, Nanda's mother, had established a donation endowed with six factors for the community of monks headed by Sariputta & Moggallana. On seeing this, he addressed the monks: "Monks, the lay woman Velukandaki, Nanda's mother, has established a donation endowed with six factors for the community of monks headed by Sariputta & Moggallana.

"And how is a donation endowed with six factors? There is the case where there are the three factors of the donor, the three factors of the recipients.

"And which are the three factors of the donor? There is the case where the donor, before giving, is glad; while giving, his/her mind is bright & clear; and after giving is gratified. These are the three factors of the donor.

"And which are the three factors of the recipients? There is the case where the recipients are free of passion or are practicing for the subduing of passion; free of aversion or practicing for the subduing of aversion; and free of delusion or practicing for the subduing of delusion. These are the three factors of the recipients.

"Such are the three factors of the donor, the three factors of the recipients. And this is how a donation is endowed with six factors.

"And it is not easy to take the measure of the merit of a donation thus endowed with six factors as 'just this much a bonanza of merit, a bonanza of what is skillful — a nutriment of bliss, heavenly, resulting in bliss, leading to heaven — that leads to what is desirable, pleasing, charming, beneficial, pleasant.' It is simply reckoned as a great mass of merit, incalculable, immeasurable. 1

"Just as it is not easy to take the measure of the great ocean as 'just this many buckets of water, just this many hundreds of buckets of water, just this many thousands of buckets of water, or just this many hundreds of thousands of buckets of water.' It is simply reckoned as a great mass of water, incalculable, immeasurable. In the same way, it is not easy to take the measure of the merit of a donation thus endowed with six factors as 'just this much a bonanza of merit, a bonanza of what is skillful — a nutriment of bliss, heavenly, resulting in bliss, leading to heaven — that leads to what is desirable, pleasing, charming, beneficial, pleasant.' It is simply reckoned as a great mass of merit, incalculable, immeasurable."

 Before giving, glad; while giving, the mind is bright & clear; having given, one is gratified:  This is the consummation of the sacrifice. Free of passion, free of aversion, free of delusion, without fermentation:  the consummation of the field of the sacrifice,  one restrained, leading the holy life.2 Having rinsed oneself, having given with one's own hands,  then — because of oneself,  because of the other — 3 that is a sacrifice yielding great fruit. Having given thus  — intelligent — a person of conviction, with awareness released,  reappears  — wise — in a world of bliss  unalloyed.

In science fiction, the Three Laws of Robotics are a set of three rules written by Isaac Asimov, which almost all positronic robots appearing in his fiction must obey. Introduced in his 1942 short story "Runaround".

The Laws state the following:

“

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

”

I personally discovered that we can safely replace "Machine" for "Robot" in the above law.

[But don't take my words at face value, as the Buddha was also known to have said. Please do verify the law for through your own experiences.]

"The Kali Yuga"

Shukdev
describes about the dynasties that would occur in Kaliyug. Ripunjay
or Puranjay would be the last king of Brihdrath dynasty. This dynasty
would be succeeded by the kings of Nand dynasty. Then a diplomatic
Brahmin, named Chanakya, would exterminate this dynasty and enthrone
Chandragupt Maurya. In Maurya dynasty, a great king would occur by
the name of Ashokvardhan. After him, Yavans would rule then for six
hundred and forty years. Their rule would be succeeded by the
governance of the fair-complexioned foreigners, who would rule for
one hundred and sixty years. Thereafter, there would be no king and
no subjects because people from all the classes would come forward to
rule.

The ruler would be selected by the majority votes. There
would be no any thing like holyness. Cows would grow thin like
nannies. People would not marry, as per their castes. Greed,
selfishness and sex would be the base of marriage life. In adverse
conditions, spouses would desert each-other. There would be nothing
like duty, responsibility and conduct. Hair would be the main item of
adornment for the women.

People would not have the knowledge
of religious scriptures in Kaliyug. Talkativeness would be identified
with knowledge. Only those would be regarded as clever, who could
pick others' pockets. Children would not regard or pay due respect to
their parents. Children would maintain relations with parents till
their marriage only, not after that. Boys would not touch the feet of
their own parents, but would pay full respect to their father and
mother-in-law, Brother-in-law would be dearer to them than their own
brother.

Shukdev says: Parikshit, Kaliyug is the mine of
faults, But it has only one great virtue - that the people will
acquire divine position only by reciting Lord's name. Recitation of
Lord's name, regardless of intention and motivation-- whether it is
love, derision, laziness or maliceness- would destroy one's
sins.

But
O Parikshit, the sinister people would do even the most difficult
tasks in Kaliyug, but they would not recite Lord's name. They would
not have an interest in the Lord. Their interests would be more in
sensuous things like sound, touch, beauty, scent etc.

O
Parikshit, the Paramgati (supreme salvation) that people could
receive by ten thousand years of meditation in Satyuga; by performing
Yagya for hundred years in Tretayuga and by worshiping Lord,s idol
for ten years in Dwapar, that supreme salvation is easily available
for people in Kaliyug simply by reciting Lord's name for one day and
one night continuously. But still,in Kaliyug people would not have
faith in Lord's name.

It
is their misfortune.

THE SAGES CURSE YADUVANSHIS

Shukdev
said: "O Parikshit, as the time passed, Yaduvanshis grew
stronger and more influencial. Now no longer did they like the
welcoming and treating of the great sages like Kanu, Dhrvasa,
Maitreya, Dhannmy etc. by the Lord. Lord Krishna knew about their
disliking, but secretly He was pleased by this change in Yaduvanshi's
behaviour, for He knew that by disregarding the saints and the
scriptures, they would meet their end sooner.

Once the
Yaduvanshis clothed Jambvati's son Samb in a woman's attire and,
showing him to the sages asked mockingly: "Maharaj, this is our
sister-in-law. She is an expecting mother. She feels shy to ask but
tell us what will be born to her?

Through their unfailing
vision, the Sages knew the reality and said: "Fools, a pestle
shall be born to her and that pestle shall exterminate the entire
Yaduvansh. Now all the Yaduvanshis were perplexed by sages'
prediction, and approached their king Ugrasen. But, even the king was
helpless now because he could not change the words the pious
sages.

In due course , a pestle was born to Samb.
Frightened of an imminent fate, Yaduvanshis crushed the pestle into a
fine powder and threw it into the sea. Only a nail remained, that
also was thrown into the sea where a fish swallowed it. A fisher
caught the fish and cut it open and found the nail. He gave it to a
hunter. The hunter fixed the nail in the head of his arrow. On the
other hand, the sea waves washed the powder of the pestle ashore
where it germinated and grew as luxuriant grasses. Later on, once all
the Yaduvanshis assembled at the sea-shore for a picnic where they
drank wine and began to fight with one another under intoxication.
Soon their quarrel grew so high that they pulled out the grasses,
which were growing there, to use as the arms. With the grasses the
Yaduvanshis beat one another to death.

NARAD
PREACHES VASUDEV ABOUT Bhagwad

Once Narad arrived
in Dwaraka. Vasudev prayed him and requested to provide him with
pious company of Bhagwad dharma. Narad said: "O king, once upon
a time, nine great sages arrived in the court of the king Janak. King
Janak had put the same curiosity before them also. I will narrate the
conversation that followed there between the sages and the
king."

First of all, the first Yogishwar Kavi said: "O
king Janak, dedication is the first duty (dharma) of a Vaishnav. He
should devote everything - his actions, fruits of actions and even
himself, at the feet of Lord. He ought to hear about Lord's virtues.
Such a devotee shall be indifferent to the worldly affairs and shall
laugh, dance or sing occasionally and sanctified all the three
worlds."

The king then asked about the characteristics of
the Lord's devotees. Another Yogeshwar Hari said: "A true
devotee of the Lord remains unaffected by feelings like hunger,
thirst, life, death, labour, pain, fear and desire. Such a devotee is
the excellent kind of Bhagwad. Even the wealth of all the three
worlds cannot shake the faith of such a devotee, because Lord Shri
Hari himself stays in his heart."

"What is
illusion?" A Yogeshwar Antariksh replied: "King, an
illusion is also God's play. Having a possessive feeling about
mundane is illusion. Thinking in terms of 'I', 'Me', 'Mine', 'My',
'You', 'Your' is also illusion. If one can have such an affection for
God as he has for worldly things, one can easily surmount the
illusion."

King
Janak then asked about the method of worshipping Lord. A yogeshwar,
Karbhajan said: " O king, the Lord had a fair complexion in
Satyuga. People used to receive Him through methods like meditation,
reconciliation, etc. In Tretayuga, the Lord had reddish complexion
and Yagyas were the main means to achieve Him. In Dwaparyuga, the
Lord had yellowish complexion and He could be pleased through
worships. In the present Kaliyuga, Lord has dark complexion and one
can receive Him through means like recitation, narration and hearing
of His name and plays.

Thus, narad preached Vasudev about
Bhagwad dharma. Now the heart and mind of Vasudev were thoroughly
clean and pure.

LORD DEPARTS TO HIS
ABODE & DESTRUCTION OF YADUVANSHIS

To remind
the Lord about the moment of His departure, Brahma arrived in Dwaraka
accompanied by all the gods. He prayed to Him: "O Lord, you have
completed your duty of what we had once requested you. Now, You
please return to your abode. Lord said: "On the seventh day from
now, Dwaraka shall submerge in the sea and Yadavas shall fight among
themselves to death. I too shall depart then. The arrow of a hunter
shall be the cause of my departure."

When Uddhav learned
that Lord was about to wind up His plays, he approached Him and said:
"I understand, O Lord, that this all is happening by your wish.
But I cannot part for a moment from your feet. Hence, take me also
with you to your abode." Lord said: "Uddhav, I will not go
anywhere. My entire brilliance will be present in Shrimad Bhagwad.
You stay here preaching Bhagwad dharma." Saying thus, lord
preached Uddhav about the Geeta Gyana through the tale of
Avadhoot.

Lord narrated thus: "Uddhav, Once, our ancestor
Yadu happened to see Lord Dattatreya in a forest. Lord was indulged
in the supreme joy in the guise of Avadhoot. Yadu asked him about the
reasons for his whimsical state." Avadhoot had said: "O
king, making the various animals, birds, insects etc as my teacher, I
have learned about spirituality from them. That is why I am free from
mourning and attachment. Earth, air, sky, water, fire, the moon the
sun, pigeon, python, sea, grasshopper, bumblebee, honey bee,
elephant, extractor of honey, deer, fish, prostitute, osprey, boy,
girls, arrow-maker, snake, spider and wasp are all my teachers. I
took refuge at these twenty-four teachers and learned from their
behaviour.

I learned forgiveness from earth, purity from the
sky, holiness and cleanliness from the water, innocence and
renunciation from the fire; indifferentness from the air, to remain
unaffected by circumstances from moon, abdication from the Sun,
incoherence from the pigeon, dependence upon fate and remain
effortless from the python, to remain always happy and serious from
the sea, to be under the control of sense organs and hence meet total
destruction from the grasshopper, acquiring of virtues from
bumblebee, fault in cumulating from honey bee, to abstain sensuous
talks from the Deer, to eliminate greed from the fish, sorrow in hope
and happiness in desperation from the prostitute, to feel happy in
uncertainty from osprey, dispute among many from the girls,
concentration from the arrow-maker, to roam alone and detachment from
a particular place from the snake, virtues of the creator Lord from
the spider, and I learned similarity from the wasp."

In
the guise of Avadhoot, Lord Dattatreya says: "O king, I learned
wisdom and apathy from my body also, because life, death, life and
death again are inseparably intertwined with it. Hence the net result
of loving this body is nothing but sorrow. Thus our own body also
helps us to learn about metaphysical knowledge.

Lord Krishna
also explained Uddhav regarding futility of physical and heavenly
luxuries. This human body is like a tree, on which two birds -
Jeevatma and Paramatma (microcosm and supreme soul) - have taken
shelter. Two fruits - happiness and sorrow - appear on it. These
fruits are eaten by Jeevatma (micrososm) while Paramatma (supreme
soul) stays as an indifferent onlooker. There are three kinds of Jeev
- Baddh (Bound), Bhakt (devotee) and Mukt(liberated). Baddh Jeevas
(bound souls) are those who indulge in sensual pleasures and those
who dislike pious company. Mukt Jeev (liberated souls) are those who
are free from attachment and bindings. Bhakt (devotees) are those who
meditate on me and dedicate their everything in my feet and have love
for my virtues. My devotee is kind, free from flaws, tolerant, has
feeling of fraternity for all and controls his desires.

Lord said: "Uddhav, in the world, there
is indeed a dearth of such tolerant people who can tolerate bitter
remarks of evil ones. In this context there is a tale of a greedy
Brahmin who lived in Ujjain. That Brahmin had been badly tormented by
the evil people after he had lost his wealth. But still the Brahmin
did not lose his patience and regarding his present state as a result
of his previous birth's deeds, he expressed his feelings thus:

These
people are not the cause of my miseries; neither the gods, nor body,
not even planets and time, can be blamed for my miseries. Scriptures
and learned ones held the mind itself guilty of one's miseries. It is
the mind that runs the cycle of the world and makes every kind of
efforts.

In the absence of mind, even the soul is rendered
motionless. When one accepts the dictates of the mind and indulges in
sensual pleasures, soul too comes to be bound with them. The ultimate
outcome of all the spiritual efforts like celibacy, study of Vedas
etc. and abidance to pious actions is the concentration of mind.
Concentration of mind and is abstaintation from sensual pleasures are
the primary conditions for attainment of Paramyoga (supreme
meditation). Thus Lord preached Uddhav about Gyana Geeta. Uddhav too
took Bhagwad (which is a form of the Lord) with honour and departed
for Badrikashrama.

The Creation of the Universe - Maitreya

asked with devotion by Vidurji, Mahatma Maitreya illuminated the
glory of God and other events like creation of universe by illusion
and origin of colossus body, and said: No one can measure the
eternal glory of God and the illusions created by Him.

In
the beginning God created the primitive elements and the flaws
associated with them. Then he created the colossus universe and
entered it.

DESCRIPTION
OF TEN WAYS CREATION BY MAITREY

By
the inspiration of God and because of imbalance in pious virtues,
creation of Mahattatva (the soul) was the first (Mahattatva the
soul).
From
Mahattatva (the soul) originates Ahankaar (the ego) which generates
five primitive elements (the earth, the fire, the air, the water
and the ether), sense organs and motor organs.
Group
of Tanmatras (the subtle forms of matter) that generate the five
major elements, is the third creation.
Creation
of organs that have the power of sensing and moving is the fourth
creation.
Creation
of the mind that governs the senses and was appeared from ego, is
the fifth creation.
Appearance
of mind and the illusions that misguide it, is the sixth creation.
The
above mentioned six creations are known as natural creations also.
Creatures other than these six have no power of knowledge, they can
experience the touch only. These creatures like trees and other
vegetables are known as the seventh creation.
Eighth
creation is of the birds and animals.
Ninth
creation is of those human beings who seek pleasure in action and
luxuries which are infact the cause of sorrow.
Tenth
creation is of the great sages like Sanatkumar etc. Thus at the
beginning of the Kalp, God the creator used Rajogunas (royal
virtues) to create himself in the form of the universe.

Maitreyaji
says, " This whole creation is a manifestation of the plays of
God. That omnipotent God created the universe just by His wish and
for the sake of His play. For the extension of the creation, Lord
Brahma wished and create four sons-Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatan and
Sanatkumar.

Thereafter, with a desire to create world, Lord
Brahma ordered them to produce population. But Lord Brahma's sons
had no interest in wordily affairs. Lord Brahma therefore cursed
them to remain in children's form for ever. Then from Lord Brahma's
eyebrows appeared a baby, blue-red in color. The baby appeared in
eleven forms and began to cry immediately after his arrival. Lord
Brahma consoled him! "Don't cry my son, you will be named as
Rundra." So the eleven forms of the baby came to be known as
eleven Rundras. Rundranis (female Rundra) were also created. From
Tamas Prakriti (malignant nature) Rundra created the ghosts, the
spooks, the spectres, the devils, lamias etc. Afraid by their
appearances, Lord Brahma prayed Rudra, " O Mahadev, please stop
creating such formidable organisms. They are already enough in
number. Now, you please undertake penance to comfort all the
creatures."

Thereafter, Lord Brahma created ten more
sons-Marichi, Bhrigu, Kratu, Pulah, Pulatsya, Angira, Atri,
Vashishtha, Daksh and Narad. Nine out of them took permission for
the creation of their offsprings, but Narad accepted celibacy and
resolved to preach Bhagwad bhakti (devotion for God.)

For the
continuation of the creation, Lord himself appeared as a female from
the left hand and as a male from the right hand of Lord Brahma.
Those males and females forms were named Manu and Shatarupa
respectively. They were the first in the whole creation to copulate
and bring about sexual reproduction. They begot two sons- Priyvrat
and Uttanapad, and three daughters- Devhuti, Akuti and Prasuti. As
the primitive king, Manu was the fosterer of the earth. By then a
demon named Hiranyaksh abducted the earth and hid it under the
abyssimal depth of the ocean, causing worries for Lord Brahma.
Instantly Lord appeared himself in Varah (boar) incarnation and to
do away with Lord Brahma's worries, He at once entered the depth of
the ocean and rescued the earth on His long teeth. On the way the
Lord had an encounter with Hiranyaksh and killed the demon with His
wheel.
Maitreya: says Hiranyaksh represented anger. Those who
don't want to discharge their duties, but still wish to live with
all the comforts are abductors of others wealth. Such people, who
continuously interfere with equal distribution of wealth, must be
condemned as the demons.

On the origin of the demons,
Maitreya cryptic said, once Diti, the wife Maharshi Kashyap,
expressed her desire to conceive. Maharshi Kashyap tried to disuade
her that time was not suitable for an auspicious job like
conception. But Diti kept on insisting and forced her husband
shamelessly to assist her in the process. Consequently she conceived
during the dusk. Kashyapji cautioned her "you will give birth
to the demons." And with the arrival of the demons in Diti's
womb, nature began to manifest herself adversely.

There was
terror and famine all around, and darkness prevailed even during
day, with stars appearing in the sky. Frightened by these
manifestations, the gods asked Lord Brahma about the reason of all
those disturbances. Lord Brahma informed them that two dread demons
were to take birth from Diti. Those two demons, told Lord Brahma,
were the two gatekeepers-- Jay-Vijay, of the Lord's abode. Once,
Sanakadi Kumar had gone to Vaikunthdham (the abode of God) to see
God but those two gatekeepers didn't let them in. Sanakadi tried
thrice, but only to be stymied every time by those two gatekeepers
at the gates. Hence, Sanakadi Kumar cursed them to take birth on
earth as demons. Those two gatekeepers of the God's abode Jay-Vijay
appeared first as Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, second time as
Ravan and Kumbhkuran and third time as Duntvakra and Shishupal.

*It then takes birth because of my grace. But as soon as it
appears on the earh the human being begins to forget me. Still, I
present him with my sight for two to three months more, when he
begins to laugh. But people arooound him think that he is laughing
for his mother. Nobody reminds him of me in his childhood. Youth of
a human being passes in futile activities. In old age, his organs
begin to fail and a human being finds himself unable to recite my
name. Thus, the whole life of a human being just passes in the
illusion of 'I', 'me' and 'my' and he reaches his last stage, and
begins to realize his mistake. But then it is usually too late for
him to do anything for his benefaction. If he has done any good deed
in life, he may meet fortune, but without a devotion for me, no one
can be happy. Only when the soul comes in my refuge, he gets free
from the bondages of life and death. – lord Kapila.

Vajrasana (Thunderbolt or Zen Pose) : http://www.yogapoint.com/info/vajrasana.htm - 10 minutes (in the beginning you will not be able to sustain for more than 1 or 2 minutes. but within a couple of weeks, your relevant muscles will strengthen and the time will increase.[ This is the traditional way for sitting at Home in Japan. They sit in this posture to drink tea, eat, chat, everything..] SPINE STRAIGHT. FEEL Your Breath.
ii. Padmasana (Lotus pose) : This is a very popular pose and is considered to be the king of all asanas. But beware: RIGHT LEG FIRST!. - as long as comfortable and without stress and strain. (timing will increase with practice). Most will find it difficult to get into this posture. Don't worry. Practise with Right heel on the left thigh, as close to (if possible touching) the left groin, left leg straight or slightly bent..essentially just one leg up at a time, AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. Alternate to the other leg and repeat. After about 10 days (max) of proacticing this sincerely you will be able to achieve the asana. Sustainance will come with time. Read my Orkut headline. EVENINGS. ( 4:00-8:00..can go up to 10:00, but NEVER AFTER A MEAL (then you will have a great digestion, but no "elevation").

c. try to be mindful of your body and not think of ANYTHING.

Freehand exercises would be good. but I suggest RUNNING (+ a little freehand if possible after it).. NOTHING like it! RUN, RUN , RUN (just go to US and see what folks there are up to).

In DAYTIME (twilight to twilight), best timing - Eaaarly morning...sweet sweet BHOR.

4. Live as close to your workplace as possible. ( will buy you time to do your OWN STUFF, become an individual, a HUMAN BEING, YOU [as opposed to a cog in a wheel that you have become, travelling for hours up and down]).

5. what ONE man can do, EVERYONE else can do too. NOTHING in this world is so difficult that a human being cannot do. All it takes is knowing the method (and mastering it through practice) [and of course....HAVING the WILL]

Step 1: Boiling Mad!
Close your room, set your alarm for 15 minutes later. Become angry; get heated up, as if to 100 degrees. Bring it to a climax but don’t release it. Go on forcing it — go almost crazy with anger — but don’t release it. No expression…not even a pillow to hit. Repress it in every way — just the opposite of catharsis.

If you feel tension rising in the stomach as if something is going to explode, pull the stomach in; make it as tense as you can. If you feel the shoulders are becoming tense, make them more tense. Let the whole body be as tense as possible, almost as if on a volcano — boiling within and no release. That is the point to remember — no release. Don’t scream, otherwise the stomach will relax. Don’t hit anything, otherwise the shoulders will be released of tension.

Step 2: Then Just Watch...
When the alarm goes off, sit silently, close your eyes and just watch what is happening. Relax the body. This heating of the system will force your patterns to melt....

I propose, there be quota placed on househol electricity consumption in accordance with the amount of tax people pay. It SHOULD be a humane principle. and a HONEST one. (Meaning, the graph will be WAY off from a linear one. But don't we boast of Aryabhatta. These details can be figured out MOST easily.)

We should ask some Japanese company to design and manufacture domestic metres for us according to this new scheme.

what provoked me to write this:

1. my Dad says Global warming is being caused by forest fires in the US. He leaves Lights and Fans switched on in EVERY room of the house (if it was entirely up to him - for the WHOLE day [ Day & Night])

2. I have a VERY close friend who told me about people he knows, who leave for office after turning their home AC on, so that the house stays cool when they return home.

Rethinking waste management

April 2004 - There is no Indian policy document which examines waste as part of a cycle of production-consumption-recovery or perceives waste through a prism of overall sustainability. In fact, interventions have been fragmented and are often contradictory. The new Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules 2000, which came into effect from January 2004, fail even to manage waste in a cyclic process. Waste management still is a linear system of collection and disposal, creating health and environmental hazards.

Urban India is likely to face a massive waste disposal problem in the coming years. Until now, the problem of waste has been seen as one of cleaning and disposing as rubbish. But a closer look at the current and future scenario reveals that waste needs to be treated holistically, recognising its natural resource roots as well as health impacts. Waste can be wealth, which has tremendous potential not only for generating livelihoods for the urban poor but can also enrich the earth through composting and recycling rather than spreading pollution as has been the case. Increasing urban migration and a high density of population will make waste management a difficult issue to handle in the near future, if a new paradigm for approaching it is not created.

Developing countries such as India are undergoing a massive migration of their population from rural to urban centres. New consumption patterns and social linkages are emerging. India will have more than 40 per cent, i.e. over 400 million people, clustered in cities over the next thirty years (UN, 1995). Modern urban living brings on the problem of waste, which increases in quantity, and changes in composition with each passing day. There is, however, an inadequate understanding of the problem, both of infrastructure requirements as well as its social dimensions. Urban planners, municipal agencies, environmental regulators, labour groups, citizens’ groups and non-governmental organisations need to develop a variety of responses which are rooted in local dynamics, rather than borrow non-contextual solutions from elsewhere.

There have been a variety of policy responses to the problem of urban solid waste in India, especially over the past few years, yet sustainable solutions either of organic or inorganic waste remain untapped and unattended. All policy documents as well as legislation dealing with urban solid waste mention or acknowledge recycling as one of the ways of diverting waste, but they do so in a piece-meal manner and do not address the framework needed to enable this to happen. Critical issues such as industry responsibility, a critical paradigm to enable sustainable recycling and to catalyse waste reduction through, say better packing, have not been touched upon.

Any new paradigm should include a cradle-to-grave approach with responsibility being shared by many stakeholders, including product manufacturers, consumers and communities, the recycling industry, trade, municipalities and the urban poor.

What is our waste?

Consumption, linked to per capita income, has a strong relationship with waste generation. As per capita income rises, more savings are spent on goods and services, especially when the transition is from a low income to a middle-income level. Urbanisation not only concentrates waste, but also raises generation rates since rural consumers consume less than urban ones. India will probably see a rise in waste generation from less than 40,000 metric tonnes per year to over 125,000 metric tonnes by the year 2030 (Srishti, 2000). Technologies, which can process organic wastes have to be a mainstay to any solution. The Supreme Court appointed the Burman Committee (1999), which rightly recommended that composting should be carried out in each municipality. Composting is probably the easiest and most appropriate technology to deal with a majority of our waste, given its organic nature.

However, new and expensive technologies are being pushed to deal with our urban waste problem, ignoring their environmental and social implications. It is particularly true in the case of thermal treatment of waste using technologies such as gasification, incineration, pyrolysis or pellatisation. Indian waste content does not provide enough fuel value (caloric value) for profitable energy production (and is unlikely to do so soon). It needs the addition of auxiliary fuel or energy. Such technologies put communities to risk and are opposed widely. For example, the United States has not been able to install a new incinerator for the past five years, while costs for burning garbage have escalated astronomically with rising environmental standards in Europe.

For developing countries, recycling of waste is the most economically viable option available both in terms of employment generation for the urban poor with no skills and investment.

• Pyrolysis - Risky, but favoured

While the more developed countries are doing away with incinerators because of high costs (due to higher standards of emission control), developing countries have become potential markets for dumping such technologies. Incinerators routinely emit dioxins, furans and polychlorinated by-phenyls (PCB), which are deadly toxins, casing cancer and endocrine system damage. Other conventional toxins such as mercury, heavy metals are also released. Pollution control costs for incinerators can exceed over 50 per cent of their already astronomical cost, and an incinerator for 2,000 metric tonnes of waste per day can cost over 500 million US dollars. Ironically, the better the air control works, the more pollutants are transferred to land and water, through scrubbers and filters and the problem of safe landfill disposal of the ash remains.

Again, such measures go against the requirements of the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules 2000, which asks for source segregation of waste for cleaner composting and recycling. The lessons of incinerating Indian urban waste do not seem to have been learnt, despite a disastrous experience with a Dutch-funded incinerator in Delhi. It ran for just one week in 1984, since the calorific value of the fuel was less than half of that the incinerator needed.

Policy responses

At the national policy level, the ministry of environment and forests has recently legislated the Municipal Waste Management and Handling Rules 2000. This law details the practices to be followed by the various municipalities for managing urban waste. However, the response has been segmented and far from satisfactory.

First, it does not address mechanisms which will be needed for promoting recycling, or waste minimisation. Secondly, there is no provision for any public participation, despite the fact that the Rules have been an outcome of public pressure and the immense work done by non-government organisations and community groups in this area. Other recent policy documents include the Ministry of Urban Affairs’ Shukla Committee’s Report (January 2000) the Supreme Court appointed Burman Committee’s Report (March 1999), and the Report of the National Plastic Waste Management Task Force (August 1997).

But the present rules and regulations are inadequate both in terms of assessing environmental impact of waste and its economic and social implications. For developing countries, recycling of waste is the most economically viable option available both in terms of employment generation for the urban poor with no skills and investment. Indirectly this also preserves the natural resources going down the drains. Some local governments have taken initiatives to burn waste through incineration or gasification for insignificant electricity generation at astronomical cost and with dangerous environmental impacts, and which will take away the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of the urban poor.

Urban poverty, informal recycling sector and livelihood questions

Urban poverty is inextricably linked with waste. In India alone, over a million people find livelihood opportunities in the area of waste; they are engaged in waste collection (popularly known as ragpicking) and recycling through well-organised systems. A substantial population of urban poor in other developing countries also earn their livelihood through waste. It is important to understand issues of waste in this context. The informal sector dealing with waste is engaged in various types of work like waste picking, sorting, recycling and at the organised level, door-to-door collection, composting and recycling recovery. The municipalities in many developing countries do not do any recycling recovery on their own.

Recycling of only some types of materials like plastics, paper and metals is not enough. A recycling research carried out by Srishti revealed that many types of new materials mainly used for packaging are not, or indeed cannot be, recycled in the low-end technology being employed. Besides, there are serious issues of poor occupational safety provisions of the waste pickers as well as workers. This sector faces a severe threat from the new business model approach to managing waste being promoted, without any attempts to integrate existing systems in them. There is an urgent need to build upon existing systems instead of attempting to replace them blindly with models from developed countries.

The Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, as well as Agriculture, should develop the market for compost, and if required provide subsidies for compost manure – first to provide organic soil nutrients to the farmers and to solve the urban waste problem which continuously is polluting land through uncontrolled dumping.

India’s 35 largest cities alone can provide 5.7 million tonnes a year of organic manure if their biodegradable waste is composted and returned to the soil. Integrated plant nutrient management, using city compost along with synthetic fertilisers, can generate enormous national savings as well as cleaning urban India. There is scarcely any other national programme which can bring such huge benefits to both urban and rural sectors.

Municipal response

At another level, the trend in cities in developing countries is to shift the traditional municipal responsibility to private actors without considering the host of existing stakeholders. Also upstream focuses such as making producers responsible for packaging waste are lacking. Excessive reliance is placed on technologies many of which are expensive with high environmental and economic ramifications. For instance, installing an incinerator leaves the question of waste recycling - or toxic environmental impacts - unanswered.

Merely replacing one centralised system by another does not change waste behaviour on its own, or ensure continued livelihood opportunities for those who live off waste such as waste-pickers. It also does not ensure that economically deprived communities in metropolitan cities in particular (four metropolitan cities have nearly more then 300,000 livelihoods) and 40 per cent of the urban poor have cleaner neighbourhoods. Often such replacement has direct and hidden subsidies, mostly at the expense of poorer communities and the environment. For instance, waste disposal sifting is often done in poorer neighbourhoods, leading to groundwater and other types of contamination.

Though community projects are working well and fulfilling the greater objectives of environmental safety and natural resource conservation, they are doing so under great economic and social stress. There is neither the recognition nor support for such work by the different institutions from various stakeholders. Hence there is a need to bring the work into the larger public space and review the rules and regulations both for enhancing and providing incentive to such community waste management systems.

Composting: the environmentally and economically sustainable solution

Composting of city wastes is a legal requirement provided under the Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSW) Rules 2000 for all municipal bodies in the country. But neither the central nor the state governments have yet responded to show any kind of preparedness for it, nor have they been able to grasp it as an environmental and social good that requires official support which can generate employment. The MSW Rules 2000 requires that “biodegradable wastes shall be processed by composting, vermi-composting, anaerobic digestion or any other appropriate biological processing for the stabilisation of wastes”. The specified deadline for setting up of waste processing and disposal facilities was 31 December 2003 or earlier.

The production and sale of city compost is not the primary function of city administrations, but it will need to be privatised for optimum efficiency and care. Several entrepreneurs have already entered the field and many compost plants are in place, almost all on public land made available at a nominal cost. These companies are willing to wait for the five to seven years payback on their investment, but are facing tremendous problems of producing compost from unsegregated wastes, and of marketing and distributing their product. The government is indifferent to the problems of these compost producers (i.e. a working capital crunch because of highly seasonal demand) and to farmers’ needs (i.e., timely, easily accessible availability of affordable compost).

The Fertiliser Association of India, the leading lobby group for synthetic fertilisers, is focused on protecting the fertiliser producers’ massive subsidies (Rs 142,500 million annually) for their chemical fertilisers – subsidies from which the farmers do not benefit. This situation is increasingly coming under national debate. Just 12 per cent of this annual subsidy would meet the one-time capital cost of city compost plants in India’s 400 largest cities (which include cities with populations of over 100,000 people) and would be able to produce 5.7 million tonnes a year of organic soil conditioners. Integrated plant nutrient management (IPNM) would also reduce the foreign exchange burden on the Indian exchequer because bulk supplies of phosphorus and potassium must be imported. In addition, the government of India spends Rs 43.19 million on phosphorus and potassium concessions alone. (Phosphorous is used to store and transfer energy within the plant. It is used in forming nucleic acids (DNA, RNA). Potassium remains in tissues in ionic form and is not used in the synthesis of new compounds as are nitrogen and phosphorous. Potassium is mobile in plants and tends to move from older to younger, more active growing tissue.)

Emphasising IPNM using city compost, which can be produced all over the country can be a successful strategy if a focused inter-ministerial effort is made. However, in spite of the fact that the Ministry of Agriculture renamed its Department of Fertilisers as the “Department of Integrated Nutrient Management” a year ago, no policy changes have taken place whatsoever. A proposed Task Force including the agriculture and fertiliser ministries may soon formulate an Action Plan for IPNM.

The real economic benefits of compost use, like improved soil quality, water retention, biological activity, micronutrient content and improved pest resistance of crops, are ignored by policy-makers and fertiliser producers. Fertiliser producers do not yet realise that preventing soil depletion and reclaiming degraded soils would in fact increase the size of the market and therefore, also their market share, which is currently threatened by globalisation and world prices that undercut their own. Since most large fertiliser plants are government-owned, another threat is the government’s intended policy of closing down loss-making public-sector enterprises and disinvesting from profitable ones.

Preliminary surveys on municipalities' preparedness in implementing the MSW Rules 2000 show that the majority of the cities are yet to embark on city-wide implementation of door-to-door collection of waste, source segregation, composting of organics, recycling and creating engineered and safe landfill sites for residual waste disposal. The municipalities were given three years time to make such preparations but most of them have not even woken up. This is the regard given to the apex court’s verdict. Whether municipalities will enforce the MSW Rules 2000 and provide cleaner and healthier cities is yet to be seen. For now, the risk remains that MSW Rules will become yet another policy to gather dust due to government apathy. ⊕

Kangaroos can reduce environmental impact of farming

MELBOURNE: Kangaroos who consume less water and energy than sheep can reduce environmental impact of farming, a recent Australian survey has found.

According to University of Sydney, the study that tracked and recorded Kangaroos energy requirements concluded that kangaroos consumed only about 13% as much water as sheep.

Adam Munn, a lecturer in Sydney's faculty of veterinary science, spent five weeks on the study, 'The Australian' report said here.

He hoped his research will encourage greater uses for kangaroos. "With climate change, most rangelands are going to need to look at diverse options for land management for sustainability," he says.

Knowing the reduced impact of kangaroos on the environment gives graziers these options. "You could use kangaroos for eco-tourism without the environmental impact once thought, or increase the use of kangaroo for human and pet food consumption."

A sheep's diet consists mainly of saltbush. "Sheep feeding on saltbush will drink around 12 litres of water a day, as opposed to kangaroos, which drink around 1.5 litres per day," Munn said adding 'The discrepancy between the water requirements is attributed to their different diets and bodily functions. Kangaroos are better at concentrating their urine, and sheep eat more saltbush."

I think SHEEP are foreign to Australia and Kangaroos are NATIVE to it.

For those of you who have used it, you'll know that Debian is a solid distribution of Linux. Like Fedora or OpenSuSe, it was developed with all users in mind. Unfortunately, what many of the geekier users to this day fail to wrap their minds around is that this "Windows thinking" they complain about is more or less about ease of use, versus "choice." And I believe that this is why Ubuntu is, more than other Debian distributions, out-performing Debian proper.

Users not interested in mythical 'Linux education'

The idea that the average new user really ought to consider becoming more educated with Linux in order to merely use it is just plain silly. Granted, for the geek set interested in learning, this is a great plan. It will save you time and money instead of funding one of the common Linux profit models -- tech support. Give me a break. I have been using Linux for longer than I care to admit, and the fact is that most people simply want the end result, a successfully running Linux box. And I hope that most people remain clueless as it does help make sure that our favorite companies giving away their distributions can still successfully provide tech support as a business for their product. Even for generally basic tasks.

If you place most people into the "command line" world while expecting success, you will instead hear the pitter-patter of their feet as they run back to their previous OS. It's a simple matter of understanding what the general public wants. Despite the immense benefit Debian has provided for the Linux community, it is not a ready, off-the-shelf product that Joe User is going to wish to use. Looking at Ubuntu's numbers speak for themselves to that end.

Is too much choice a bad thing?

Who is primarily being driven to Ubuntu over Debian? It appears to be a mix between those who need consistency with their desktop; meaning not being asked which desktop they prefer to use, etc, and those who simply wish to have the bleeding edge thrown at them with their Linux installations.

Debian on the other hand, is generally believed to be more secure. And, right from Mark Shuttleworth's own mouth:

"But the majority of the Ubuntu community is made up of newer developers, who are attracted to the Ubuntu way of doing things."
So it may not just be a question of the so-called "ethics of free software." It could also be a matter of the perception of security, depending on the developers who push out the Ubuntu code.

Engineers are not marketers

Until Ubuntu came along, you had to hold up a stick to see Debian development move. Yes, that was mean -- get over it, I am dead on. Using Debian was like driving your father's Oldsmobile. It has been well maintained for years, and it provided safety, dependability, and driving at 15 MPH for as long as you need it to.

Ubuntu, on the other hand, was edgy, took chances, and more often than not, had more bugs than users might care to admit. But it was showing signs of life, while Debian had the visual appearance of being on a heart monitor just so people knew it was still alive.

Another huge distinction I have seen between the two distributions is that the Ubuntu group actually understands appealing to the newer user. Simply browsing between the home pages for both projects will show you how polar opposite the two development groups actually are. In short, Debian is offered as a "here it is" proposition.

Ubuntu provides an attractive (yes, brown can be attractive) and excitement-filled experience from the moment the site visitor happens onto the page. I would venture to say that Ubuntu is using what has worked for Apple with regard to building a web site that gets people motivated to try their product. Count downs to new releases, glossy graphics. As pointless as this may seem to the developers, this type of thing most definitely matters to many of the potential users out there. Then again, being able to tap into a corporate bankroll does not hurt, either.

As an RSS hound myself, I did find it amusing that Debian had a better handle on the proper way to provide an RSS feed over Ubuntu. Those of you using Firefox know what I am talking, about assuming you visit their news feeds. Ubuntu provides a link to the feed on site, while Debian properly uses browser RSS auto-discovery so the user can see its availability right there from the address bar. Of course, no one besides the geeky-types will ever likely notice this as they will simply visit the web site or sign up for some sort of email update anyway. So again, it's about thinking less like the engineer and more like a casual user. And Debian, while secure, stable, and highly customizable, is NOT as user friendly.

Is Ubuntu with or competing Debian?

One area that most people outside of the Debian community still are generally not aware of is that Ubuntu and the sponsoring corporation, Canonical, has not offered a lot of clarity as to just how important Debian is to the success of the Ubuntu project.

As a matter of fact, you have to work fairly hard to find any mention of Debian at all, despite its critical importance to Ubuntu's existence and continued growth. And here is just one of the many areas where I myself have seen friction between the users and developers of the two distributions. Granted, they have it linked on their background page, but Debian is KEY to Ubuntu's success. So it would be quite proper of the Ubuntu team to realize this and perhaps make this known on a more frequent basis in some kind of agreeable fashion. If I were a Debian developer, I would be beyond upset by this.

So doesn't Ubuntu give back to Debian in some fashion? Take patches.ubuntu.com. This should be where Ubuntu is giving back, but it seems that some from the Debian community feel strongly that this approach is not working. It's been described as a monolithic approach. Debian developers and even Mark Shuttleworth have both agreed that these should be more modular, however it seems that this has yet to really happen; or has it? I've looked through this recently, and being I am not a developer by trade, may have hit upon an issue that has since been resolved? Due to other Ubuntu habits however, I doubt that this modular change was real high on their priority list.

And so the same question remains -- is Ubuntu doing more harm than good for Debian? Let me simply go on record as saying that Ubuntu, while a fantastic distro, has little interest in seeing Debian become anything more than yet another cog in the greater Ubuntu machine. Remember that Canonical knows full well that Debian has done plenty to limit themselves without any outside help. So competing does indeed happen to some extent, although it happens almost completely in the shadows, where the users are likely totally unaware of the consequences.

Ubuntu has taken on a bit of a more realist approach to their Linux distribution while Debian seems tied to software political ideals that, while rather Utopian, will ensure the limited adoption of an otherwise solid distro that I certainly enjoy. The easiest difference here would be the fact that Ubuntu and Canonical make it easier to dance around the GPL, by providing tools for GPL compliance just the same. Having your cake and eating it too, as the old saying goes. By the same token, it would also be fair to say that Ubuntu, on behalf of Canonical, has greater aims than simply turning a profit and expanding the reach of the open source desktop unto the world at large. So it might be better to consider this over the GPL squabbles anyway.

Is your operating system a mission statement or a tool?

Ask any Mac user and they will tell you a thousand reasons why they enjoy their Mac: it just works, the software, etc. You ask someone who has moved exclusively to Ubuntu, you will find many similar answers, despite being able to find many of the same results with a clean Debian installation.

In the end, it comes down to whom the distribution is trying to target. Debian is a fantastic purist distro. And Ubuntu is one of a few great options for complete newbies. However, it's when these two worlds cross within the Linux universe that things get a bit sticky.

Shobogenzo chapter 2 - On the Great Wisdom beyond Discriminatory thoughts (Makahannya-haramitsu)

Translator’s Introduction: Makahannya-haramitsu, the earliest dated Dharma talk in the Shōbōgenzō, was given by Dōgen to his monks in his renovated monastery, which he had renamed Kannondōri. The discourse consists largely of paraphrases from the Scripture Which Is the Heart of the Prajñāpāramitā, also called the Heart Scripture (J. Hannya Shin Gyō), and lengthy quotations from the Larger Scripture on Spiritual Wisdom (J. Dai Hannya Gyō), plus a poem by his Chinese Master Tendō Nyojō, to all of which he has added comments.

There is an allusion in the discourse that may not be as obvious in the translation as it is in the original. In passages from the Larger Scripture on Spiritual Wisdom, the questioner is identified as Tentaishaku, ‘the Lord of the Heavens’, a common epithet for Indra. Thus, at first glance, the ensuing dialogue would appear to be between a divine personage from the Hindu pantheon and Subhuti, one of the Buddha’s chief disciples who was known for his understanding of the Buddha’s Teachings on the Immaculacy of Emptiness. However, in the original text the reader is given a subtle hint as to the questioner’s real identity when Subhuti addresses him as Kaushika (‘He Whose Eyes Look Askance at Things’), an epithet applied to Indra when taking human form. In other words, the questioner is a human who, from haughtiness, considers himself the equal of the Lord of the Heavens, as he looks askance at the Buddha’s Teachings.

When Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva* was at one with the deepest Wisdom of the Heart which is beyond discriminatory thought, He saw with utmost clarity that the five skandhas which comprise one’s whole being were as space. The five skandhas are our physical form, our sensory perceptions, our mental conceptions and ideas, our volition, and our consciousness: they are a fivefold manifestation of Wisdom. To clarify what the meaning and import of this is, He said, “Our physical form is as pure and unbounded as space,” and “The Unbounded is what our physical form is.” Our physical forms are forms: the Unbounded is what is unbounded. The former are ‘the hundreds of individual sproutings’: the Latter is the multiplicity of form.

When the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought manifests in twelvefold form, It is the twelve sensory fields—that is, the six sensory faculties along with what they perceive to be the roperties of all thoughts and things. And this Wisdom has an eighteenfold manifestation, comprised of the six sensory faculties of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, tactile body, and mind plus their six perceived properties, respectively, color, sound, odor, taste, feel, and mental contents, along with the six forms of consciousness associated with eyes, ears, nose, tongue, tactile body, and mind. And this Wisdom has a fourfold manifestation: the arising of suffering, its cause, its ultimate extinguishing, and the method whereby it is extinguished. And this Wisdom has a sixfold manifestation, consisting of almsgiving, keeping to the Pure Precepts, practicing patience, making diligent effort, doing serene reflection meditation, and applying wise discernment. And the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought has a singular expression, which is constantly manifesting before our very eyes here and now: It is total and absolute enlightenment. And the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought has a threefold manifestation as past, present, and future. And this Wisdom has a sixfold manifestation as earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness. And this Wisdom has a fourfold manifestation which occurs in daily life as moving, standing, sitting, and reclining. There was once a mendicant monk in the assembly of the Tathagata Shakyamuni who was thinking to himself, “I bow in deepest respect to the profound Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought. And well I should, for even though within this Wisdom there is nothing that gets born or becomes extinct, nevertheless You have been able to establish that by following the Precepts, our physical skandha will be beyond dualistic morality; that by meditative contemplation, our sensory skandha will be tranquil and freed from all false ideas; that by practicing wise discernment, our consciousness skandha will be wise in what it sees; that by practicing non-attachment, our volitional skandha will be fully liberated from defiling passions; and that by practicing all-acceptance, our thought skandha will have complete comprehension of this liberated state. You have also been able to establish that the fruits of entering the stream of training, the fruits of returning but once more to the world of desire, the fruits of not returning to that world, and the fruits of arhathood* truly exist. You have been able to establish that there is the enlightenment solely realized by oneself, as well as the supreme awakening wherein all manifold forms that arise or ‘sprout up’ because of a set of conditions, persist for a while, then disappear when the conditions that brought them about change. things are viewed alike as enlightened. 2 You have been able to establish that there are the Treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as to establish that there is a turning of the Wheel of the Dharma and a ferrying of all manner of sentient beings to the Other Shore.” The Buddha, aware of these thoughts, addressed the monk, saying, “It is just as you have been thinking, just as you have thought: the profound Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought is subtle and difficult for the intellect to fathom.”

In regard to the private thoughts of this monk, whenever someone bows down in respect to all things, the wisdom that prompted this monk to say, “even though there is no being born or becoming extinct, nevertheless…,” expresses a ‘bowing down in respect’. When there is this moment of ‘being duly respectful’, the wisdom of what the Buddha was able to establish in this connection is right before your very eyes and encompasses everything the monk had in mind, from the practicing of Precepts, meditation, and wise discernment up through the ferrying of sentient beings to the Other Shore. It is this that we mean when we speak of ‘Mu’. What this expedient term ‘Mu’ refers to can be realized through the practices just outlined, for this ‘Mu’ is the profound, subtle, and inscrutable Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought.

Someone present, a veritable Indra, Lord of the Heavens, asked the Buddha’s long-standing senior disciple Subhuti, “O great virtuous one, if some bodhisattva or mahasattva* were desirous of studying this ‘Profound Wisdom That is Beyond Discriminatory Thought’, just how,

precisely, should he go about studying such a thing?” Subhuti replied, “O you who look with doubting eyes, if a bodhisattva or mahasattva is desirous of learning about the Profound

Thus, ‘learning what Wisdom is’ means ‘to be free of preconceptions’: ‘being free of preconceptions’ is what ‘studying Wisdom’ is.

This Indra Lord of the Heavens then addressed the Buddha, saying, “World-honored One, if virtuous men and women were to receive this teaching on Your purported ‘Wisdom That is Beyond Discriminatory Thought’, hold to it, and recite it to others chapter and verse, were they to explore its implications and then lecture upon it to others, what could they possibly do to defend it from critical attack? All I am really asking, O World-honored One, is that You, out of Your compassion, give us instruction.”

This time, the Buddha’s senior monk Subhuti responded to this lordly Indra by saying, “O you with the doubting eyes, do you see any way in which this Teaching can be defended?” The lordly one replied, “No, O great virtuous one, I do not see any way in which this teaching can be defended.” Subhuti then said, “O you with the doubting eyes, if virtuous men and women explain the matter as the Buddha has, the profound Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought will, in fact, be Its own defense. If virtuous men and women put forth the matter in this way, they will never be far from the profound Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought. You need to understand that, as long as any being—human or non-human— seeks to be told what It means while acting from a desire to do harm or mischief, that being will ultimately not be able to realize It. O you with the doubting eyes, if your motive is to defend and protect It, you should act in accordance with what has been said here. All bodhisattvas and the Deepest Wisdom That is Beyond Discriminatory Thought are in no way different from the desire to defend and protect That which is like the clear and empty sky.”

Understand that to receive this Teaching, keep to It, accurately recite It to others, and explore Its implications is precisely what ‘defending and protecting Wisdom’ means. To desire to defend and protect It means that you receive the Teaching, keep to It, accurately recite It to others, and so forth. My former Master, a Buddha of old, once said in verse:

My whole being is like the mouth of a bell suspended in empty space:

It does not ask whether the wind blows east or west,

north or south.

Impartial to all, it sounds the Wisdom for the sake of

others:

“Bong bong bong,” says the wind bell, “bong bong

bong.”

This is the sounding of Wisdom, which is the right Transmission of Buddhas and Ancestors. His whole being is this Wisdom, the whole of others is this Wisdom, the whole of oneself is this Wisdom, the whole of east and west, north and south is this Wisdom. Shakyamuni Buddha then said, “Shariputra, when it comes to the matter of the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought, all sentient beings, of whatever sort they may be, are to be offered spiritual provisions and respectfully bowed to, each treated as a place where a Buddha dwells. Your exploration of the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought should be done as though you were making spiritual offerings and respectfully bowing to the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One. “And why so? Because the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought is not something different from the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One, nor is the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One something different from what the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought is. The Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought is, in fact, the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One, just as the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One is, in fact, the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought.

“And how so? Because, Shariputra, all Tathagatas as arhats and Fully Awakened Ones have, without exception, been able to appear in the world by virtue of the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought. And because, Shariputra, all bodhisattvas, mahasattvas, pratyekabuddhas*, arhats, non-returners, once-returners, and stream-enterers have, without

exception, been able to appear in the world by virtue of the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought.5 And because, Shariputra, in all the worlds, the ten ways of doing good, the four meditations leading to heavenly states, the four meditative states beyond the world of form, and

the five wondrous faculties have, without exception, been able to appear in the world by virtue of the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought.”

Thus it is that the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One is the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought: the Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought is all the various thoughts and things. All these various things are as empty space: they are neither born nor do they wholly die, they are not stained nor yet immaculate, increasing not, decreasing not. When this Wisdom Beyond Discriminatory Thought is manifesting before our very eyes, It is the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One manifesting before our very eyes. Inquire into this; keep it in mind. To make offerings and bow respectfully is, indeed, to look with reverence to, trust in, and faithfully follow the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One: to look with reverence to, trust in, and faithfully follow Him is to be the Buddha as the Awakened and Revered One.

This was delivered to the monastic assembly at Kannondōri during the summer retreat in the irst year of the Tempuku era [1233].

Is It Real? If So, Am I Gonna Make It?

Is “all this Ascension stuff” for real, or is it just the imbecile fantasy of people deeply divorced from reality? Here is what the media never tells you, at least not all at once.

We all know that the Earth is experiencing global warming and other changes, whether the petroleum giants like it or not. Just read the headlines. What we may NOT know is the following:

SUN: The Sun’s magnetic field is over 230 percent stronger now than it was at the beginning of the 1900s, and its overall energetic activity has sizably increased, creating a frenzy of activity that continues to embarrass NASA’s official predictions.

VENUS: Venus is now glowing in the dark, as is Jupiter’s moon Io.

MARS: The icecaps of Mars noticeably melted just within one year, causing 50-percent changes in surface features. Atmospheric density had risen by 200 percent above previous observations.

JUPITER: Jupiter has become so highly energized that it is now surrounded by a visibly glowing donut tube of energy in the path of the moon Io. The size of Jupiter’s magnetic field has more than doubled since 1992. [I - kindly verify from the internet.]

SATURN: Saturn’s polar regions have been noticeably brightening, and its magnetic field strength increasing.

URANUS: According to NASA’s Voyager II space probe, Uranus and Neptune both appear to have had recent magnetic pole shifts – 60 degrees for Uranus and 50 for Neptune.

NEPTUNE: Neptune has become 40 percent brighter in infrared since 1996, and is fully 100-percent brighter in certain areas. [I - kindly verify from the internet.] Also, Neptune’s moon Triton has had a “very large percentage increase” in atmospheric pressure and temperature, comparable to a 22-degree Fahrenheit increase on Earth.

PLUTO: As of September 2002, Pluto has experienced a 300-percent increase in its atmospheric pressure in the last 14 years, while also becoming noticeably darker in color.

Everything you have just read is referenced from mainstream media sources, and the full list of relevant links can be found within chapter eight of Divine Cosmos. The whole key to mass media control is to ensure that these facts are never seen all at the same time. It becomes “all too weird” once we add in the ever-increasingly stressful socio-political events on Earth, such as a “perpetual war against terrorism,” with the smirking Bush as Wild-West-Messiah-In-Chief playing “Bring ‘em On for Armageddon,” along with the fulfillment of many other ancient prophecies, including those of the Judeo-Christian Bible.

Here at DivineCosmos.com, we have freely published a compelling scientific case for there being a Convergence, Shift of the Ages, dimensional shift or Ascension now underway. When this solar-system-wide process is complete, estimated to be within the timeframe of 2010-2013, we can expect an “Omega Point” event that is literally “beyond our wildest dreams.” The changes in the Solar System are only the more obvious and physical result of these changes, where the energy of consciousness itself is being upgraded, causing mass evolution to occur.

But, alas. Undeniable Solar System changes aside, isn’t this all just too good to be true, on this Bush-whacked planet? Why not? Wouldn’t something like this be a nice surprise, to say the least?

What other explanation fits for the whole Solar System going through this metamorphosis, while similarly huge events are happening at an accelerating rate in Earth society? How about including the fact that almost every established body of historical spiritual teaching, from all cultures, has some form of prediction about this event that is now coming true?

Before the scientific data was ever available, a vast, far-reaching model of a Divine Cosmos, which perfectly predicts and explains these solar system changes, was presented within a series of channeled materials from L/L Research known as the “Law of One” series. This material was authored by a group soul known as Ra from 1981-1984 – the same Ra that claims to have worked with the Egyptian people. The Law of One series is now widely hailed as the most accurate and insightful channeled information of modern times. In the simplest terms, the Law of One model says that these changes are caused by our Solar System moving into a new zone of energy in the Galaxy.

On that note, Russian and NASA data has confirmed that the front end of the Sun’s magnetic field has become over 1000 percent brighter in the last 30+ years. We know that if you rub a piece of metal fast enough, you create what is known as friction, and the metal will begin glowing red-hot. In the same manner, the extra dust and energy in this new galactic energy zone is colliding with the Sun’s magnetic field, causing friction and creating a visible static charge of “plasma” energy at the front that is rapidly increasing in size and brightness.

As of 1997, Dr. Aleskey Dmitriev and other Russian scientists observed that the Galactic space we are now moving into is showing significantly higher concentrations of matter and energy, including charged particles of hydrogen, helium and hydroxyl, in addition to other new combinations of elements. Although the West has always lagged behind the Russians in the scientific arena, they are finally catching up. Just as of August 2003, an ESA/NASA experiment called DUST, launched with the Ulysses satellite in 1990, has discovered that there is 300 percent more dust from our Galaxy entering the Solar System now than there was throughout all of the 1990s. More dust and more charged particles means more energy, more density, which is exactly the word Ra used to describe this new intergalactic zone.

In the Law of One series, this forthcoming Ascension event is said to propel the earth into a state that will be considered one hundred times more harmonious than life on Earth is at present, which would be a definite improvement… a world where, as the Master Jesus once said, “As I do these things, so shall ye do them, and greater things…” (Holy Bible, John 14:12)

The next question is this: Do we just sit back and wait for the “cosmic magic carpet ride,” or does personal ambition and participation have something to do with what we will experience as this interplanetary evolution completes itself?

The Law of One series and many other sources, including my own, tell us that we DO have to prepare for this event. Though some might groan as if hearing a bad punchline, the secret is that “it’s all about spiritual growth in the end.” In order to “make the Ascension”, we have to achieve an above 50-percent motivation towards “service to others,” or the positive path, as opposed to “service to self,” or the negative path.

Providing that we accept the validity of the Law of One information, we are then led to a crucial question: What IS Service to Others, exactly? How does one practice it to the best of one’s own ability, especially if you are trying to do more than just meet the minimum requirements?

At times, the Service to Others path is said to be the path of unity, seeing all others as the self, whereas the Service to Self path is said to be the path of separation, seeing the self as above all others. Here is the exact quote that emerged in the Law of One series when the questioner asked Ra for more detail as to the best way to follow the service to others path:

The best way to be of service to others is the constant attempt to seek to share the love of the Creator as it is known to the inner self. This involves self-knowledge and the ability to open the self to the other-self without hesitation. This involves, shall we say, radiating that which is the essence or the heart of the mind/body/spirit complex. Speaking to the intention of your question, the best way for each seeker in third density to be of service to others is unique to that mind/body/spirit complex. This means that the mind/body/spirit complex must then seek within itself the intelligence of its own discernment as to the way it may best serve other-selves. This will be different for each. There is no best.

There is no generalization. Nothing is known.

Drinking LOTs (and lots and lots) of Water?

I have recently started drinking alot more water after a long period of not having drank as much as I should have. I go through this evey few months or so. After a few days of drinking water, I begin to feel pain in my right side, underneath my ribcage, more towards the back. I don't know if it's one of my kidneys or my liver or what. The pain can be pretty strong; it usually happens after I've consumed quite a bit of water (nothing too extreme, though), and sometimes lasts the better part of a day. Is it just one of my organs detoxing?

The location you describe sounds like a kidney. If I drink too much water, I end up going to the bathroom every 15 minutes and my kidneys hurt. Not good! You can damage your kidneys by doing this.I have heard very many times, as I am sure you have, that we need to drink gobs and gobs of water. It's not true. Drinking too much water is harmful and can even kill you. Listen to your body. It's trying to tell you something. Sometimes I drink more water as well, for a half a day. But don't over do it! There are certain conditions for drinking more water, like hot weather and running. Just listen to your body, and use your brain. Older people sometimes cannot sense when they feel dehydrated so they need to be more aware of how much water they are drinking. But if you are young, your body is very much in tune to this. You can pay attention to the color of your urine. If it is clear, then you've certainly have had enough water. Maybe you already heard this story...This radio station in California had a water drinking contest. Whoever drank the most water would win a Sony Playstation (I think that's what it was). This woman was there because she wanted to win this for her children. A nurse called in to the station and told them that what they were doing was very dangerous, but they didn't believe her. It ended up that the woman died. The radio station said that they didn't understand why she died and were going to investigate it. Stupid idiots!

[I] now what more can anyone add to this, unless it's another real life story seen first hand by one. I read sometimes back in the newspaper that a British lady drank 7 pints of water all together at night and died in her sleep due to her brain cells bursting. I myself drink lots of water when I am working. However, my "LOT"s always comes with a strict measure according to my body needs.
